The short version

First, get your real square footage. The free measure calculator adds waste and rounds up to full boxes, so every number below has something to multiply against.

Plank cost by tier

Material-only prices, per square foot, as of fall 2026. The wear layer is the clear top coat, measured in mils. Thickness is the whole plank, measured in millimeters. They are not the same thing. See Understand LVP for the difference.

Budget: about $1.50–$2.50

Usually about a 6 mil wear layer, and often about 4–5 mm thick. Thinner planks show subfloor bumps more easily.

Fits: guest rooms, closets, low traffic.

Mid-range: about $2.50–$4

Usually about a 12 mil wear layer, and often about 5–6.5 mm rigid core. Many have a pad already attached.

Fits: bedrooms, living rooms, kids.

Premium: about $4–$7+

20 mil and up wear layer, and often about 6–8 mm with an attached pad. Top designer lines can cost more.

Fits: dogs, entries, kitchens, heavy traffic.
Have dogs? Start at 20 mil. Claws and grit wear through a thin wear layer first, and that is the one spec you can't add later. On a 12×12 room, going from 12 mil to 20 mil often adds a few hundred dollars. See Is vinyl okay for my room?

Big-box examples line up with this. Home Depot's budget lines start under $2 per sq ft, while its 20 mil lines run closer to $4–$5. Lowe's and Home Depot cost guides put typical LVP at about $2–$6 per sq ft. Specialty and designer brands can run past $7.

Tools for a DIY job

A click-lock room needs only a few tools. Many people already own a tape measure, square, and utility knife.

The full list, with what each tool does, is in Tools & materials.

Flooring install kit

Tapping block, pull bar, and spacers in one box. Check that the block fits your plank's lock.

DIY vs pro labor

Labor is often a third to half of an installed LVP bill. Here is roughly what you pay for it.

DIY

$0 labor. You pay for planks plus about 10% waste, any underlayment, trim, transitions, and tools. You also spend a weekend or two, depending on the rooms. Mistakes cost planks.

Pro install

Click-lock labor is often about $2–$5 per sq ft. Angi's 2026 range for vinyl install labor is wider, about $1–$10, because it covers glue-down, stairs, and tricky rooms. Small rooms may hit a minimum job charge.

Extras people forget

Removing the old floor

Often about $1–$2 per sq ft when a pro does it. Carpet is on the cheap end. Glued vinyl and tile cost more.

Old vinyl or glue in an older home can contain asbestos. Test before you scrape.

Subfloor prep

Leveling or patching is often about $1–$3 per sq ft where it's needed. Replacing a damaged subfloor costs much more.

Check flatness before you get quotes. See Prep.

Quarter round or baseboard

Primed quarter round is about $1–$2 per linear foot at Home Depot and Lowe's. Installed, quotes often run about $1.50–$4 per foot.

Reusing your baseboards saves the most.

Transitions

T-moldings and reducers are often about $10–$30 each, or more for matching colors. A pro may charge about $25–$75 per doorway installed.

One at each doorway where the floor changes.

Angi suggests budgeting about $150–$700 extra for subfloor repairs, tear-out, and transitions on a typical vinyl job. Furniture moving, stairs, and disposal fees are often separate lines too.

Worked example: a 12×12 bedroom

A 12 ft × 12 ft room is 144 sq ft. Add about 10% waste for cuts and you need about 159 sq ft. With boxes of about 20 sq ft, that is 8 boxes, or 160 sq ft. Your box size will differ, so run your own room through the measure calculator.

  1. Planks (160 sq ft): budget about $240–$400, mid-range about $400–$640, premium 20 mil about $640–$1,120.
  2. Underlayment: $0 with an attached pad, or about $40–$145 for a separate one.
  3. Quarter round: six 8 ft pieces (48 ft) is about $50–$100 in materials.
  4. One transition at the door: about $10–$30.
  5. Tools: about $20–$35 for an install kit. A cutter is optional.

DIY, mid-range planks

About $500–$950 total. That works out to roughly $3.30–$6.60 per sq ft of floor.

Pro, mid-range planks

About $800–$1,750. That is the planks plus about $2–$5 per sq ft labor, installed trim, and a transition. Add about $150–$300 if they also pull up the carpet.

Rough math, not a quote. Tax, delivery, a minimum job charge, or subfloor repairs can move it.

LVP cost FAQ

How much does vinyl plank flooring cost per square foot?

Roughly $1.50 to $7 per square foot for the planks alone, depending on wear layer and brand, and roughly $4 to $12 per square foot installed by a pro. Most mid-grade installed jobs land around $5 to $9. These are approximate 2026 US ranges from national cost guides, and local prices vary.

How much is labor to install LVP?

Click-lock LVP labor is often quoted around $2 to $5 per square foot. Angi's 2026 range for vinyl installation labor is wider, about $1 to $10, because it covers glue-down, stairs, and complex rooms. Small rooms may hit a minimum job charge. Removal and subfloor prep are usually extra.

Is it cheaper to install LVP yourself?

Usually, yes. DIY skips the labor line, which is often a third to half of the bill. You still pay for planks, waste, underlayment if needed, trim, transitions, and a few tools. Mistakes cost planks, so buy about 10% extra.

What wear layer should I buy if I have dogs?

Start at 20 mil. About 6 mil is for light use and about 12 mil is the usual home floor. A 20 mil wear layer costs more per square foot but holds up better to claws and grit.

What extra costs should I budget for besides planks and labor?

Underlayment if the planks have no attached pad (about $0.25 to $1 per square foot), removing the old floor (often about $1 to $2 per square foot), subfloor leveling (about $1 to $3 per square foot where needed), quarter round or baseboard, and transition strips at doorways.
