Guide · LVP over tile

Quick answer

Can you put LVP over tile?

Often, yes. Floating click-lock vinyl plank can go over tile that is flat and solid, if the plank maker allows it. Here is how to check the tile, what prep it needs, and what else changes when the floor gets taller.

When it works

Floating click-lock vinyl plank can often go right over ceramic or porcelain tile. That saves a dusty, heavy tear-out. It works when three things are true:

Prep the tile

  1. Tap every tile — a hollow sound means it is loose. Re-set or remove it and fill the gap.
  2. Check edges — tiles that sit higher than their neighbors can show through. Grind high edges or fill around them.
  3. Fill wide grout lines — deep or wide grout lines can show through thin planks over time. Fill them flush with a patch or leveling compound made for the job, and let it cure.
  4. Clean — scrape off old wax, sealer residue, and bumps, then vacuum.
  5. Underlayment — if the planks have a pad attached, most brands do not want a second one. If the tile sits on a concrete slab, check whether the brand wants a vapor barrier too.

Check the height

The new floor sits on top of the tile, so everything gets taller by the plank thickness plus any underlayment. Before you start, check:

Other floors you might cover

Carpet

Remove carpet and pad first. Floating planks need a firm base.

Pull the tack strips and staples too.

Sheet vinyl or old vinyl tile

Often okay if it is one layer, flat, and well stuck down. Cushioned sheet vinyl is a common no. Check your brand.

In older homes, old vinyl and its glue can contain asbestos. Don't sand or scrape it before testing.

Hardwood

Often okay if it is flat, fastened down, and dry. Squeaks and soft spots get fixed first.

Run planks across the old boards if your sheet asks for it.

Glue-down vinyl over tile

Harder than floating. The surface has to be very flat and prepared for the adhesive.

Treat it as advanced, or hire it out.
Pause if: tiles are loose in more than a few spots, the floor has signs of a past leak, or the tile is on a slab with moisture problems. Covering it hides the problem. It does not fix it.

LVP over tile FAQ

Can you put LVP over tile?

Often, yes. Floating click-lock LVP can go over ceramic or porcelain tile when the tile is flat, solidly bonded, and the plank maker allows installing over existing hard floors. Check the install instructions for your exact product before you buy.

Do I need to fill grout lines before laying LVP over tile?

Usually, if the grout lines are wide or deep. Thin planks can show the grid of grout lines over time. Fill the lines flush with a patch or leveling compound made for the job, and let it cure before you lay planks.

Will LVP over tile be too tall for my doors?

It might be. The new floor adds the plank thickness, plus any underlayment, on top of the tile. Check door swing, the dishwasher opening under the counter, toilet flanges, and where the floor meets the next room before you start.

Can you put LVP over carpet?

No. Pull up carpet and pad first. A floating floor needs a firm, flat base, and carpet lets the planks flex, which can break the locks.
