Troubleshoot

Most problems that show up after install come from prep, the wrong product for the load, or locks that never fully seated. Check this list before you rip everything out.

Gaps between planks

Locks not fully engaged, missing spacers causing binding, or seasonal movement without gap at walls.

Try: reseat with tapping block; verify perimeter expansion; check for pinched trim.

Peaking / tenting at seams

Often moisture under the floor, no expansion gap, or floor forced against walls/cabinets.

Try: stop mopping wet; inspect gaps; moisture test slab — call a pro if widespread.

Won’t click / broken lock

Debris in joint, wrong angle, damaged tongue, or product too thin for the abuse.

Try: clean groove; replace damaged plank; don’t force with a steel hammer on the edge.

Telegraphing / ridges show

Subfloor not flat; thin LVP highlighting every ripple.

Fix: leveling before reinstall — thicker product helps only within brand flatness limits.

Dents & early wear

Wear layer too thin, missing chair mats, grit, or underspec thickness for furniture/rolling loads.

Prevent: pads, mats, thicker wear layer next time (see Understand LVP).

Hollow / clicky sound

Uneven subfloor, missing underlayment where required, or plank not seated.

Try: map high/low spots; confirm pad requirements.
Call a pro when: moisture readings fail, large areas peak, mold/odor appears, radiant heat is involved, or stairs/bathrooms need waterproofing details you’re unsure about.
